the story of The Hydra
Black Hydra is a composing team, who specialise in motion picture advertising music and film/TV music. The team, founded by Ben Hayden and James Murray , create colossal music for theatrical trailers, as well as bespoke music for television promos, commercials and video game advertising campaigns. Collectively they have had many placements both in the film trailer and television world.
Ben is one of the Black Hydra founders and together with James he writes epic and high impact trailer music. His music, as well as the Black Hydra collective, has seen many usages on global trailers, BBC promos, ABC Promos and many american and british television programmes.
Ben started his music career as a guitarist/songwriter, studying at LCCM in London, and after attaining his degree, began seeking work. He then took up writing music for short films and production music libraries. His trailer world opened up to him when he was asked to work on custom briefs and write trailer albums for libraries. Progressing from there, he has worked with big names such as Universal Music, Immediate Music and Alibi Music. Through these companies, he has had his music played and recorded in some the most renowned studios including Angel Studios and The Farm studios.
Ben met James through a mutual friend and have been writing ever since. They first started experimenting with different sounds and genres to get their huge and ever expanding signature sound.
James was born in Essex, England and is quickly becoming one of the most exciting emerging composers of this generation.
After finishing a BA (Hons) degree in music composition, James found himself playing session guitar for signed artists. He toured and gigged supporting acts such as Newton Falkner, Rita Ora and Labyrinth. Soon after James secured a position working in central London producing pop music for various artists including Becky Hill, Geri Haliwell, Sophie Ellis Bexter and many more.
James has always had a passion for film music and over the past few years has made the transition into the industry with placements on all types of media from trailers to games to TV.
The skills James has earned from working in pop music lets him bring a unique and fresh style into the trailer and film music scene.
